Once Charlie had experienced the thrill of racing, his interest in Driver’s Education events began to wane.  Quickly in 2005, the majority of events he attended were PCA Club Races.  While campaigning the Turbo 3.6 in 2005, Charlie experienced immediate success by winning his class at his first race.  The Turbo 3.6 proved to be fast and reliable, but it became quite apparent at subsequent races that the car would need to be modified extensively to continue to compete at the top level.  Thus, despite finishing on the podium 80% of the time, Charlie decided to sell the Turbo 3.6 and look for a dedicated race car.

Having experienced the thrill of the GT3 Cup, Charlie knew that a factory race car would be the only choice.  This time, continuing his love of the 964, Charlie searched for a 964 Cup.  He found one in Germany and had it shipped to the United States in March of 2006.

The car had a terrific racing history.  Entered by Obermaier Racing and driven by 1991 Carrera Cup series’ rookie of the year Andreas Fuchs, Charlie’s new Cup raced in the 1992 German Carrera Cup and inaugural 1993 Porsche Supercup.  The car finished 12th in the Supercup series while racing on some of the world’s famous tracks including Imola, Monte-Carlo, Spa-Francorchamps, and Hockenheim.

964 Cups were built by Porsche’s Weissach Racing Division as a racing-only version of the 911 Carrera RS N/GT specifically to compete in the single marque Carrera Cup and Supercup racing series.  Porsche built 297 Carrera Cups from 1990-1993 and specified them at 260hp and a weight of 2425 pounds.  Unfortunately, Charlie has found Porsche’s book weight for the car to be a bit optimistic as his car has never weighed in at less then 2550 pounds.

Charlie has continued his racing success in the 964 Cup.  To date, Charlie has entered 30 races in the 964 Cup and won class poles 63% of the time, won his class 63% of the time, and been on the podium 87% of the time.  The car has proven to be an overall front-runner, as well, enabling Charlie to earn two overall group poles and three overall group wins in the car.  Charlie has yet to experience many thrills larger than winning overall in a PCA Club Race.
